This 8 week course is for learners who have little or no experience in Te reo Māori. This fun and
interactive course will cover a lot in a short amount of time. Learners will gain the key language
structures to share and discuss the places where they have lived and grown up. They will also
learn how to speak about daily activities and states of being. We also look at pronouns and
practice structures around identifying objects and moving around objects.
In every class, learners carry out a variety of activities that engage different senses and
encourage teamwork. We learn new vocabulary and sentence structures using a co-creation
process that relies on actions and gestures. How much new content we cover week to week will
be matched to the ability of those in class. There will be karakia, games, waiata and
conversations about how the topic content ties in with concepts of tikanga and Te Ao Māori.
He aha te kai ā te rangatira, he kōrero, he kōrero, he kōrero.
-This whakataukī speaks to the value of communication. What is the food of our greatest leaders, it is well
executed communication. When we communicate well, we give life to the rangatira within.
